  1. Hi,
I am researching PISA 2009 and would like to know if Finland code for indigenous people? (I.e.Sami)
Is there a significant difference between mainstream & indigenous and minority groups in Finland - as in USA?
    Many thanks
    Kevin

  2. Hi Kevin,

The PISA 2003 results showed separate results for Swedish speakers, as I discussed in earlier blog posts.

The Sami population is small. There are schools that do teach in the Sami language (in the North, mainly at the primary level) but I have not seen separate PISA scores for Sami speakers.

At a conference in Helsinki, I asked about education for the Sami. They said they do have schools in the North, but it can be difficult to score them separately as many have integrated into the main population. They said the biggest Sami population in Finland is in Helsinki.

The Swedish-speaking population scores lower in PISA than the Finnish speakers. Minority groups score lower as well, but higher than their counterparts in other countries.

    I hope that helps.

    Best wishes,

    Jennifer
